Assessments

Each School in the Faculty may have different kinds of assessments and different marking criteria. Some subjects in Arts have online submissions for assessments and that some assessment is only done online via Blackboard.

Make sure you know how to reference properly – you’ll be penalised if you don’t. Essays require a cover sheet and unless you submit one your essay won’t be marked. There are designated places to submit your hard copies (don’t put them under your lecturer’s office door!).

If you need an extension email your lecturer for permission. Late submissions are penalised. It’s usually 5% for the first day, and 2% per day after that for 14 calendar days including weekends.

TIP: All the above information is in your unit outline. The library has plenty of tips and hints on assessments and how to avoid common pitfalls. Also the Arts Academic Language and Learning Unit http://arts.monash.edu.au/lls/ offers a great range of services to help with academic matters such as referencing and essay writing…and it’s free. The Unit also has sessions during Orientation Week.

Special consideration

If you’re experiencing difficulty with your studies because of circumstances beyond your control you can apply for special consideration and be given extra time to complete your assessments or sit a deferred exam. Applying for special consideration is a formal process with deadlines. It will grant you extra time but it won’t influence your end result.
